Is It Safe to Treat Acne Scars While You Still Have Active Breakouts?

  KEY HIGHLIGHTS

•  In most cases, active acne should be brought under control before starting scar treatment.

• Treating scars while acne is still active can trigger new breakouts and new scarring in the process.

• Some maintenance-level treatments can run alongside acne control — but the sequencing still matters.

Short answer: generally, no — not as a starting point. Most acne scar treatments work by resurfacing or remodeling the skin, and doing that on skin that’s still actively breaking out tends to backfire, both for the acne and for the scars.

Why Sequencing Matters

Treatments like microneedling, laser resurfacing, and deeper chemical peels work by creating controlled micro-injury to encourage the skin to remodel and rebuild. On skin with active inflammation, that same process can spread bacteria, worsen breakouts, and — worse — create new scarring exactly where you’re trying to remove old scars.

What Dermatologists Usually Recommend

The typical approach is to get active acne under control first — through a targeted treatment plan — and only start scar treatment once breakouts are stable, usually after a few consistent weeks without new inflamed lesions. This isn’t about waiting indefinitely; it’s about giving the skin’s active inflammation time to settle before intervening for the scars underneath it.

Are There Exceptions?

Some lighter-touch treatments — mild chemical peels or targeted spot treatments — can sometimes run alongside acne control under a dermatologist’s supervision. But this is a judgment call based on your specific skin, not a default, which is why self-directed scar treatment while breakouts are ongoing is best avoided.

What This Means in Practice

  • If you have active, inflamed acne: focus on treating the acne first.
  • If your breakouts are occasional or well-controlled: a dermatologist can usually start light scar treatment sooner.
  • If you’re unsure which category you’re in: that’s exactly what a consultation is for — self-assessing acne severity is harder than it sounds.

Getting Both Right, Not Just One

The goal isn’t to choose between treating acne and treating scars — it’s sequencing them correctly so neither treatment undermines the other. At URSA, this is mapped out as part of your initial consultation rather than assumed. [Link to: Acne Scar Treatment page]

If you’re eager to start on scarring, that impatience is understandable — but treating scars too early is one of the more common ways patients end up needing more sessions than necessary, not fewer.
