KEY HIGHLIGHTS

  • A day without fluids can leave skin looking tight and dull. This is dehydration, which is different from dry skin.
  • A simple routine of gentle cleansing, a hydrating serum on damp skin, moisturiser and sunscreen does most of the work.
  • Keep a moisturiser and lip balm within reach, and rehydrate the skin properly in the evening.

Karwa Chauth is a personal and religious observance, and this article does not advise anyone on whether or how to fast. If you have a medical condition, are pregnant or take regular medication, please follow your doctor’s guidance. What follows concerns skincare only.

Why does skin look dull on a day without water?

When the body has had no fluids for many hours, skin can look tighter, flatter and duller, and fine lines become more visible. This is dehydration, a temporary shortage of water in the skin. It differs from dry skin, which is a shortage of oil, and it is treated differently: with water-binding ingredients such as hyaluronic acid, followed by a moisturiser to seal them in.

How should you prepare the night before and in the morning?

  1. Night before. Cleanse gently, apply a hyaluronic acid serum to slightly damp skin, follow with a moisturiser and apply a lip balm.
  1. Pre-dawn meal. Where the meal allows, include water-rich foods and fluids. They help the skin as well as general comfort.
  1. Morning. Cleanse gently, without scrubs or strong acids. Apply a hydrating serum on damp skin, then a moisturiser, then broad-spectrum sunscreen of SPF 30 or higher.

What should you do during the day?

  • Keep a moisturiser, hand cream and lip balm within reach and reapply when skin feels tight.
  • Avoid hot water on the face and long stretches in direct air-conditioning or heater airflow.
  • Do not rely on facial mists alone. They give brief relief, and a moisturiser applied over damp skin works better.
  • Skip exfoliating products and harsh toners for the day.
  • Wear sunscreen if you are outdoors, and reapply it if you are in the sun for long.

How should you handle makeup before the evening ritual?

Keep the base light through the day. For the evening, a hydrating primer and cream-based products sit better on dehydrated skin than heavy powders, which tend to cling to dry patches.

What should you do after the fast?

  • Rehydrate gradually, as your tradition and your doctor advise.
  • At night, remove makeup thoroughly with a double cleanse and apply a richer moisturiser than usual.
  • A hydrating sheet mask is a pleasant extra but not a requirement.
  • Return to your normal routine the next morning. Skin usually recovers within a day or two once hydration returns to normal.

A quick reference

Time Do Avoid
Night before Hydrating serum on damp skin, moisturiser, lip balm. New products and strong actives.
Morning Gentle cleanse, serum, moisturiser, sunscreen. Scrubs, acids and hot water.
During the day Reapply moisturiser and lip balm. Use shade outdoors. Relying on mists alone, or sitting in direct airflow.
Evening Light base, cream products, hydrating primer. Heavy powder over dry patches.
After the fast Double cleanse, richer moisturiser. Sleeping in makeup.

Is there a treatment for chronically dehydrated skin?

If your skin looks dehydrated even on ordinary days, a hydration-focused treatment may help. HydraFacial infuses hydrating serums, and our guide to hydrated, glowing skin with HydraFacial explains how. Skin boosters replenish hyaluronic acid within the skin, and URSA has a dedicated page on skin boosters for dehydrated skin. Neither is a same-day fix for the fast, and both are better planned for after the festive season.

If you are planning a facial before Karwa Chauth, our festive medifacials guide explains the timing, and a treatment is best booked three to five days beforehand.

Frequently asked questions

Q1. Can I use sunscreen during the fast?

Yes. Sunscreen is a skin product and has no bearing on the fast. It is particularly important if you are outdoors.

Q2. What can I do about dry, cracked lips?

Apply a lip balm with ingredients such as petrolatum or ceramides, and reapply through the day. Avoid licking the lips, which dries them further.

Q3. Can I have a facial straight after the fast?

It is better to wait a few days. A gentle hydrating facial a few days later is reasonable, and a dermatologist can advise on timing.

Q4. Is it acceptable to skip skincare because the day is busy?

A minimal routine of cleanser, moisturiser and sunscreen takes only a few minutes and makes a visible difference.

Individual results vary, and a consultation is the most reliable way to confirm what suits your skin. To speak with a dermatologist, book a consultation at either URSA clinic in Gurgaon.
